While I can see the obvious parallels, then, between Bilbo and Gollum, both of which find the Ring and come from a similar line, I still feel that making Gollum a Hobbit detracts from the legacy more than it adds to it.Edit: Ah, I have answered my own question. This would account for why he looks physically different, and I do recall, for some reason, a book or film image depicting Gollum killing another member of his species, suggesting that his appearance is not simply a side-effect of the Ring. However, zenwolf later pointed out a quote from here: this, it sounds like Gollum (Smeagol Gollum, to be precise) was a Stoorish Hobbit. If this is true, I'm very annoyed. Rather than find the exact passages from the books, however, I decided I'd pose the question to people better versed in Middle Earth lore than I.To my recollection, Gollum was of a "Hobbit-like peoples", but not actually a Hobbit. Discussing the subject in #arsclan, where all things are perpetually fun, CanSpice pointed out that lists Gollum as being a Hobbit, and I refuse to believe this.
